Taichung City New Inhabitant Art Center

A. Purposes
To create an exclusive space for new inhabitants to extend, exchange and learn their own culture, the Taichung City Government has set up this "New Inhabitant Art Center" on the first floor of Fengle Sculpture Activity Center in Nantun District. Opened to the public since July 19, 2014, this Center is composed of a classroom, a reading and writing room, a recreation area, a children’s room and an information desk.

Under the premise to assist new inhabitants in adapting themselves to local life, enhance their sense of belonging, encourage them to participate in learning activities, interact with the community, and break the stereotype that new inhabitants are passive and vulnerable, the Civil Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government has formed a volunteer team consisting of only new inhabitants to help manage the operation of this Center and the promotion of cultural exchanges. Open to the general public, this Center is aimed to narrow the distance between new inhabitants and citizens, help people better understand the culture of new inhabitants and promote cultural exchanges

B. Spatial planning
(A) Designed by Tunghai University at the first exhibition show, the Art Center’s exhibition hall is divided into two large zones. The front exhibition zone showcases the homeland cuisines and exotic cultural relics of 8 countries that most of our new inhabitants have come from (namely Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Japan, and Korea). The rear exhibition zone showcases the achievements of Household Registration Office in each administrative district in giving classes to help new inhabitants adapt to local life and the handicrafts made by new inhabitants in those training courses.

(B) The classroom can accommodate up to 20 people. Aside from provision of a space for teaching and learning, it can be also used as a meeting place for the government agencies or social organizations to discuss those topics related to new inhabitants.

(C) The reading and writing room provides propaganda information prepared in multiple languages related to the new inhabitants.

(D) The recreation area and information desk is so designed to create a comfortable atmosphere for visitors (new inhabitants and the general public) to relax, to chat, and to share life experiences with each other.
